How To Glow Without Looking Oily This Holiday!

$

0

I feel you. The holiday season is unfair to genetically- greasy face gals like us! While some can rock glowy skin in shimmering splendid, here we are wishful thinking that we can wear this holiday trend just as good. Like who wants to accentuate those pores and oil? Certainly not moi!

But it's all in the technique my sisters in greaseland! Here's how to glow without looking oily. Own the night, you party baby!

1. Always start with a clean face. Needless to say, wash, tone and moisturize. Use oil-free and mattifying products if you must. Witch hazel and salicylic acid are known to control oil and shine. And in case you don't know yet, grease exaggerates pores.

2. Use makeup primer before foundation. It will help your makeup stay in place the whole time you're partying.

3. Use oil-free and matte foundation. My go-to includes Tarte 12 hr-Amazonian Clay and Make Up For Ever Mat Velvet +.

4. Seal foundation (and concealer) with finishing powder.

The first 4 steps just made your face MATTE. Let's move to the glowy side of you.

5. Use matte or sheen for your eye makeup, never metallic beauties! We want the focus on your face remember? Alright I hear you. You still want to go for gold and bronze. No problem, just use them sparingly, oki?

6. Now decide- do you want glowing bronze ala JLo, glowing blush ala Taylor Swift or highlighted cheekbones ala Kate Moss? It can't be all of the above unless your goal is to be a disco ball.

7. Oh you want to be J Lo! Then sweep the shimmer bronze on the side of your face like number 3 (side of forehead, side of cheeks, jawline). If you're showing off your neckline and shoulders, dust some over them too. Use matte blush on your cheeks (coral or barely-there pink). You may wear bronze or hot red lippy, whatever works for you honey!

8. Hmmm you changed your mind and want to be the simple yet glowy Taylor Swift. Then use a baked blush or blush- on that has subtle shimmer. With emphasis on subtle ladies. Skip bronzer or contouring, you want to be that breath- of -fresh air amidst the sweaty hardrockin' party people!

9. Fickle-minded as you are, you finally decided to be Kate Moss, what with her highlighted cheekbones! With your angled face brush, dust highlighter on your cheekbone in an upward stroke. Don't highlight your T-zone or where you grease the most. Again, use matte blush; you can contour this time but opt for matte bronzer.

The last step is optional but if you want a smudge-free makeup whole day, mist your face with a makeup finishing spray like Skindinavia.

So given all these techniques, what are some of my favorite luminizers? That's a hard question but here are my go to's lately:

1. Too Faced Peach Leopard for glowing bronze
2 Too Faced Pink Leopard for glowing cheekbones
3. Milani Baked Blush (Luminoso 05) for glowing blush
4.The Body Shop Dazzling Rocks shade 01 Golden Copper for glowing neckline/shoulder.

How are you rockin' this glowy look?

    It's a Rosy Day with Jurlique Rose Shower Gel and Rosewater Balancing Mist

    My fascination with anything rose-scented lives on. From body butter, hand cream, mist, lip balm, perfume, can't stop sniffin' em. Today, I am adding two more to my rosy arsenal: Jurlique Rose Shower Gel and Rosewater Balancing Mist.

    { 300 ml, $22 }

    Jurlique Rose Shower Gel

    Ingredients: Aqua (Water); Sodium Laureth Sulfate;

  • Decyl Polyglucoside;
  • Cocamidopropyl Betaine;
  • Alcohol;
  • PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate;
  • Quillaja saponaria (Soap Bark Tree) Bark Extract;
  • Aesculus hippocastanum (Horse Chestnut) Seed Extract;
  • Rosmarinus officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract;
  • Equisetum arvense (Horsetail) Extract;
  • Urtica dioica (Nettle) Extract;
  • Arctium lappa (Burdock) Root Extract;
  • Chamomilla recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract;
  • Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride;
  • Macadamia ternifolia Seed Oil;
  • Honey;
  • Hydrolyzed Soy Protein;
  • Simmondsia chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil;
  • Sodium Chloride;
  • Glycerin;
  • Lecithin;
  • Fragrance (Parfum)*;
  • Lactic Acid;
  • Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate;
  • Citrus grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract;
  • Geraniol*;
  • Linalool*;
  • Citronellol*.
  • * From Natural Essential Oil

    I know what you're thinking. A shower gel does nothing but cleanse, so is the $22-tag worth it? Is Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES) any better than Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)? Well both are surfactants and used commonly in cosmetics because they are good cleansing agents. While there is no absolute proof that SLS can cause cancer (American Cancer Society), it is considered to be a skin irritant (European Journal of Dermatology). So to make it less irritating, ethylene oxide is added resulting to SLES. Which brings me to my next statement. If you have extremely sensitive skin or you have had rashes in the past related to the use of SLS or SLES, then you don't need this shower gel. But if you're like me who can tolerate SLES and you're looking for a luxurious bath brand with hydrating properties, I think you'll like this for the following reasons: it's very soothing, doesn't dry out skin, it has mild yet enticing scent.

    { 100 ml, $31 }

    Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist

    Ingredients:

    • Aqua (Water);
    •
    • Alcohol;
    •
    • Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow) Root Extract;
    •
    • Rosa gallica (Rose) Flower Extract;
    •
    • PEG-7 Glyceryl Cocoate;
    •
    • Fragrance (Parfum)*;
    •
    • Sodium Hydroxymethylglycinate;
    •
    • Lactic Acid;
    •
    • Polysorbate-20;
    •
    • Citrus grandis (Grapefruit) Seed Extract;
    •
    • Aloe barbadensis Leaf Extract;
    •
    • Geraniol*;
    •
    • Linalool*;
    •
    • Citronellol*;
    • Eugenol*;
    •
    • Benzyl Benzoate*.
    * From Natural Essential Oil (Rose - Rosa centifolia & Rosa damascena)
    I use this mist in 3 ways: as a toner (day & night),  makeup finishing spray, whenever I feel like it. I love the subtle rosy scent and it surely is invigorating. I didn't have any breakouts of sorts, thankfully.

    Don't Be Afraid Of The Big Earrings! (how to wear 'em)

    $
    0
    0

    Some of you have probably noticed my penchant for big earrings. Okay confession time- I own more than I can wear in a lifetime. But see I make jewelries so in my spare time (which is rare these days), I can bend and twist a pair of hoops whenever I feel like it. Then of course a trip to the mall is never complete without visiting the accessories section. Why this insane obsession over humongous earrings? Two things: they brighten a haggard-looking face and glam up a drab outfit.

    Oftentimes when I give my girlfriends some big earrings they'd ask "how do I wear these? will they look good on short hair? can I wear this at work? etc. I know it can get a little overwhelming, what with the countless styles and colors!

    So what are the rules in wearing these biggy earrings then? Honestly? None! Wear them to your heart's content. Biggy don't care. Alright, I take that back. I have a few but that's how I'd wear mine.

    1. Skip statement neckpiece/necklace when you're wearing big earrings. Let the ears do the talking. You can wear cuff or bangle if you want but stick to the minimum please.

    2. You can never go wrong with silver big hoops. Jeans or LBD, they look just as fab when paired with hoops.

    3. When  wearing busy or multi-colored earrings, wear a solid top that has at least one shade similar to your earrings.

    4. Consider the shape of your face and strive for balance. If you have round face, wear something that is long and angular; if you have square shape, opt for round and curves (hoops!). If you have heart shape, chandelier earrings is a great choice.

    Lastly, when buying earrings, pick the pair that made you smile. Trust me, you will look good with anything that makes you happy #positivevibes

    Let the fun begin!

    1. Futurederm Time Release Retinol 0.5% is the mildest retinol brand I have tried. I use it nightly, after toning and before moisturizing. Can't stop aging but at least I can delay wrinkles.

    2. LORAC behind the scenes eye primer does better than Urban Decay primer potion. My eye makeup stays intact even under the hot Hawaiian sun.

    3. Immuno-viva renew anti-aging serum has certified organic oils (cranberry, raspberry, sunflower, etc) that help reduce wrinkles, dry skin and dark under eyes. I use it mostly to hydrate my eye area and dry hair ends.

    4. Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour full coverage foundation works perfectly well for my oily skin. It is long-wearing, lightweight and has SPF 15.

    5. MDSolarSciences Mineral Screen Tinted Gel SPF 30 works like a primer and sunscreen in one. It applies smoothly and fragrance-free.

    6. Jurlique Citrus Purifying Mist has witch hazel, Vitamins E & C and lemon balm which help mattify and hydrate my face. I use this as a toner and makeup finishing spray.

    7. thebalm Nude'tude is my most used neutral palette in 2012. The eyeshadows are very pigmented, soft and easy to work with.

    8. I honestly felt sad when Tarantina Tarantino left Sephora so I snagged Dollskin Cheek Palette for the last time. There are four shades (3 shimmery, 1 matte) that flatter every skin tone.

    9. Physician's Formula Organic Wear (Peachy Glow Bronze) is my go-to finishing powder whenever I want that sun-kissed glow, which is basically everyday!

    10. butter LONDON All Hail The Queen is my ultimate favorite neutral nail polish.

    11. Skinn Cosmetics James Dimitri Triple Wheel Concealer has the right amount of creaminess and coverage to hide my dark under eyes and blemishes.

    12. Revlon Just Bitten Balm Stain is my best drugstore find in 2012. I like the idea of not retouching when I'm out and about.

    What about you? What's your top product discovery this year?

    Goodbye 2012, Hello 2013! The past year was filled with awesomeness and countless blessings. TheFabZilla grew in terms of readership and views (hugs to you my readers and friends); Moi landed a job that's super close to home; HubZilla had more sideline acting gigs; Save for some occasional headaches, I finished the year without getting sick! (I defeated the flu-like symptoms two nights ago!). Thank you God for everything you have blessed us with!

    Trivial as it was, I decided to welcome 2013 with a new hairstyle. It was a big deal for me though (never had major haircut since 2006). Geez, I lost about six inches, had bangs, and changed my hair color! I told the stylist I wanted a JLo- shade albeit subtle. So after 3 hours of burning my butt in the salon chair and flipping gossip magazines...

    1. Nervous as hell!
    2. Bored but excited
    3. Who knew Kate Middleton has cocker spaniel!
    (mah baby furry is one!)
    4. Tada!
    { new hair }

    The other night, I showed HubZilla my resolutions in 2012 just to check if I have achieved them. Full details here.

    1. Hmmm, almost made it to 365 posts this year! But hey 353 ain't bad considering that I have a day job.
    2. Thanks to blogging friends and networking, I was introduced to more natural and cruelty-free products in 2012.
    3. Guilty as charged. I failed this 3-days-a-week exercise. I started all hyped up during the first month and then pffft!
    4. I have totally ignored these so-called user-friendly friends. Life without stress is sooo worth it!
    5. I have managed to veer away from these melodramatic soap operas. Bravo!
    6. Yeah I got the job baby!
    7. I bought stuff which made me happy, sale or not sale- woot!

    So do I need new resolutions in 2013? Nah, I think I'll recycle my 2012 list but scrap that 3x/week exercise and replace it with once weekly (that's more doable!); eat more healthy food (cut down fast food drive-thru's to once a month), strive for 365 blog posts (set up editorial calendar); continue to use natural skincare and cruelty-free makeups.

    May 2013 bring forth more blessings to you! Happy New Year!!!!! Bwing it on coz I'm weady!

    Emerald Green is 2013's Color of the Year! It conveys royalty, optimism and prosperity. Of course I have to start the year wearing it....where else but my eyes. The key to rocking bright eye makeup is to keep the rest of the fez neutral. But it's not a hard and fast rule, wear whatever makes you happy missy! Remember, makeup is about self-expression.

    Rather than just plain emerald, I mixed it with teal and brown #justbecause.

    Products used:
    Too Faced Lock Down (I'm Guilty) for base
    Urban Decay Shattered for lid
    Urban Decay Vert for crease and lower lash line
    Tarte Shimmering Cocoa for brow bone
    Nude'tude Sultry for crease
    Cargo Swimmables (teal) for lower lashline
    Cargo black eye pencil for waterline
    Milani eye tech liquid for cat eyes
    NYX matte lipstick (Butter) + Laura Mercier lip glace (Coral diamond) for lips
    Tarina Tarantino doll cheek (matte pink)
    jane cosmetics bronzer
    Buxom mascara

    Finally, here are some ideas on how to incorporate emerald green in your wardrobe. Pick one and dress the part!

    Got Pimples? Evologie Has The Answer

    $
    0
    0

    You've probably read it before, I have oily and acne-prone skin! I hate it with so much passion that's why I'm open to try products that will ultimately give me photoshop skin perfection. Of course it's a joke. I had zits when I was hooked on Beverly Hills 90210 (the original) so it's no surprise that this nuisance from the past still hunts me in The Walking Dead generation.

    I had the opportunity to try a skincare line called Evologie. Developed by Doctors Nagel and Weinberger, this brand boasts of patent-pending YS3 complex which fights pimples and hydrates dry skin in order to heal, strengthen and safeguard its natural protective barrier. Other benefits as listed from the website:

    • Unplug and promote the drainage of clogged pores
    • Enhance penetration of natural ingredients
    • Kill bacteria responsible for breakouts
    • Reduce sebum (oil) production in the acne-prone skin
    • Will not clog pores (non-comedogenic)
    • Reduce scarring and discoloration associated with repeated breakouts
    • Effectively moisturize skin

    Evologie is also cruelty-free, devoid of parabens and SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate).

    How to use: Wash face with Stay Clear Cleanser then rinse (use morning and night); Apply Stay Clear Cream to entire face twice a day; Apply Intensive Blemish Serum directly to blemishes.

    *Before I started  my regimen, I asked if it's safe to use it alongside retinol. I was advised by Dr.Weinberger to "stop retinol" for a week since Evologie has azaleic acid* For reference, I only use retinol at night.

    Azaleic acid is used to treat mild to moderate acne. It stops bacterial growth and unclogs pores.

    Evologie Stay Clear Cleanser (150ml, $32)

    Ingredients: Water, Desyl Glucoside, Cocamidopropyl, Betaine, Glycerine, Azelaic Acid, Arginine Ethyl Ester, Salicylic Acid, Lactobacillus/Lycopene ferment extract, Chamomilla recutita flower extract, Honey extract/Mel extract, Salix nigra (will bark) extract, Leuconostoc/Radish root ferment filtrate, sodium carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Capryl Glycol, Xantham gum, Disodium EDTA, Sorbic acid, Sodium C8-16, Isoalkylsuccinyl Lactoglobulin Sulfonate, Butylene Glycol

    My take: This is a gentle cleanser and since it has no sodium lauryl sulfate, it doesn't lather. But you know it already, lather doesn't mean clean. I use this with my Clarisonic Mia 2 and I like how it feels on my skin. I was turned off initially with its slight "medicinal" scent. But fragrance is a personal preference; for me as long as it does the job, I'm game!

    Evologie Stay Clear Cream (30ml, $62)

    Ingredients: Water, Azeleic Acid, Glycerin, Isopropyl Myristate, Arginine, Salicylic Acid, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cetyl alcohol, Stearyl alcohol, Cetearyl alcohol, Polyacryate crosspolymer-6, Squalene, Kojuc acid dipalmitate, arginine ethyl ester, Lycopene glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice) root extract, Chamomilla recutita (matricaria) flower extract, Salix nigra (willow bark) extract, Sodium hyaluronate, Astaxanthin, Tocopherol, Beta glucan, Haematococcus pluvialis extract, Carthamus tinctorius (safflower) seed oil, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexyglycerin, Ceteareth-20, Polysorbate 60, Cellulose gum, Caprylic/Capric triglyceride, Microcrystalline cellulose, Dimethincone, Butylene glycol

    My take: I used this at the height of my zit apocalypse. Right after toning, I applied this cream all over my face during daytime (under makeup). On the 3rd day, I noticed more whiteheads at the side of my nose and jawline. I kind of expected this because it has salicylic acid which is an exfoliant (it cleans clogged pores). I continued my regimen nonetheless, hoping for the best. After 2 weeks of religious use (in combination with serum for flare-ups), my face was noticeably clearer.

    Evologie Intensive Blemish Serum (15ml, $35)

    Ingredients: Water, Azelaic acid, Glycerin, Arginine, Ethoxydiglycol, salicylic acid, Tea tree leaf oil, Arginine ethyl ester, Salix nigra (willow bark) extract, Lycopene, Chamomilla recutita flower extract, Xantham gum, Isopropyl myristate, Microcrytsalline cellulose, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerine, Butylele glycol, Cellulose gum, Polyacrylate crosspolymer-6

    My take:I used this specifically on pimples. It has a very distinct tea tree scent which I like (again a personal preference). Those annoying zits were dry and flat on the fourth day. Unlike benzoyl peroxide which tends to over-dry my skin, I didn't have any of that.

    Overall, if you're not satisfied with your current anti-acne regimen, Evologie may have the answer for you. They have trial sizes and/or kit if you don't want to commit to full- size bottles. Better yet, you can request for free samples! Click here

    So how was your your holiday celebration? It came by pretty fast ha! Care to share your makeup haul? I received gift cards so it was a no-brainer move for me. Sephora, Macy's, Nordstrom, bam! Makeup whatta slam!

    I've been wanting to own more Stila smudge sticks so this waterproof eye liner set came in handy. For $32 (Sephora), I thought it was an amazing deal.

    This set has five metallic eyeliners that go on smoothly. They are soft, creamy, and budge-proof. While arm swatches revealed saturated color, they are muted when used on waterline and lash line. Stargazer is gray-black, Tetra is purple, Oscar Fish is brown, Moray is olive green and Angel fish is champagne. My favorite from this set is Angelfish, I use it on my waterline and inner corner to fake a bright-eyed look.

    Do you own any Stila smudge sticks?

    In my quest to go organic, I had the opportunity to try this haircare line aptly named DermOrganic. Quite interesting because whenever I hear or read "derm", my top of mind would be skincare. But confusion aside, here are some reasons why you should try it: vegan; cruelty-free; free from synthetic preservatives, paraben, sodium chloride, dyes; sulfate & gluten-free; pH-balanced (4.5-5.5). All three products I have tried are infused with certified argan oil of Morocco, known for its skin-healing wonders.

    DermOrganic Daily Conditioning Shampoo ($16, 350ml, Ulta)
    Ingredients: Aqua/Eau/D.Water, Disodium Cocoyl Glutamate(1), Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate(2), Decyl Glucoside, Cetearyl Glucoside, Methyl Gluceth-20, Infusion of Argan Oil & Sunflower Seed Extract & Grape Seed Extract & Rice Amino Acid & Sodium PCA & Panthenol & Tocopheral Acetate (Vitamin E), Glycereth-2 Cocoate/Benzoic Acid (natural preservative), Fragrance.
    (1) Amino-Acid based, plant derived cleanser
    (2) Essential Lipid based, plant derived cleanser

    In my prior posts, I showed you my new hair color. Needless to say, I need a shampoo that is color-safe. While I can't vouch for its claim of strengthening hair as I don't have breakage issues, it gives me peace of mind that it's made with ingredients that moisturize my color-treated mane.
    DermOrganic Daily Hydrating Conditioner ($16, 300ml, Ulta)
    Ingredients: Aqua/Eau/Water, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Stearalkonium Chloride, Stearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Alcohol, Panthenol B5, Rice Amino Acids, Methyl Gluceth-20, Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, Organic Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, PCA, Glycereth-2 Cocoate & Benzoic Acid, Parfum/Fragrance.

    This product makes my wavy hair soft and manageable. After shampooing, I pump about 10 times of this conditioner, massage my scalp and hair, then detangle with wide-toothed comb. I let everything soak in for two minutes then rinse.

    DermOrganic Leave-in Treatment ($25, 120ml, Ulta)
    Ingredients: Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Organic Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Organic Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E), Organic Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Extract, Glycereth-2 Cocoate/Benzoic Acid,Parfum/Fragrance.

    My favorite from the set, this leave-in treatment makes my hair extra soft and tangle-free. With my hair still damp, I use a few drops and blow (or air) dry my hair. I also use this in between washing. It adds a little shine and doesn't weigh down my hair.
